Experience “God’s own country” from the air as you never have before, on this 2000ft Gliding Flight above North Yorkshire! Run by Burn Gliding Club, who are based at a former WWII Bomber Command airfield near Selby, this location is perhaps one of the best in this part of the UK to experience gliding from; firstly because of its scenic surroundings that look stunning from up in the air. Secondly, its positioning means that during the summer months, what the gliding team refers to as the “Pennine wave” creates optimum thermals from which to get airborne and stay there for longer. And even in the wintertime, there’s still the same thermal effect coming from nearby power stations in Drax, Eggborough and Ferrybridge - so even when it’s cold and frosty, there’s still enjoyable gliding fun to be had. Following your brief welcome on arrival, you’ll be assigned to one of the club’s fleet of twin seater gliders. After being shown the various elements of the glider, you and an expert instructor from the club will climb into the cockpit for your flight. Released by the aerotow at 2000 ft, you can expect to be up in the air for approximately 15 minutes, as you enjoy flying in this most peaceful and majestic of aircraft - no noisy engines, just the sound of the wind whistling around you as you feel weightless in the air above the White Rose county!

The gliding experience was amazing,with very knowledgeable instructors. I thoroughly enjoyed it, however there was a lot of hanging around,understandably, but no facilities for a drink or toilets available.

2000ft Aerotow
- Flights last around 15 minutes

- For mile-high flights: In the event of low cloud on the day, 2 aerotows may be offered instead
- There is a clubhouse providing hot drinks and sandwiches, and there are pubs and local hotel and BandB's that can also be recommended.
- Please note bookings should be made a minimum of 90 days before the expiry date. Bookings made after this date can only be accepted if flight slots are available.
- Spectators are welcome to come and watch you during your experience.

- The minimum age is 13
- Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult on the airfield
- Maximum weight 16 stone
- Maximum height 6'3"

- Gliding takes place on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
- Flights generally take place between 11:00 and 16:00
- During the summer months, you may be able to go gliding in the evening
- Please ensure that you book this experience well in advance to avoid disappointment

Everyone involved were polite, very informative and made you feel relaxed from the beginning. Neil who took me up in the glider was very informative and made you feel at ease, he went through all the safety precautions and instrument controls once up at 20002500feet he did a circuit then briefed me again on the controls and handed control over to me. It was a fantastic experience one that I will never forget and will definetly be coming back again Thank you to everyone Colin Watson

Its was a surprise 40th present from my wife. Everyone e one of the volunteers were friendly and reassuring. I had George as my instructor who was very friendly and talked me through everything. He was amazing up in the air. I would definitely like to come back and do it over again. Its run by volunteers who were all very professional.

A fantastic experiencePlenty of free parking. The airfield is easy to find. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Ive never flown anything before and I chose the 2000ft towed flight. The preflight briefing was very thorough yes, you do get a parachute. We went in the Janus glider. Its a 2 seat glider and you sit in the front with the pilot behind you.Alister the pilot was very good, very experienced and adept, and knew a lot about the local area. He was able to point out landmarks as far away as York. The view was amazing, beautiful golden fields and green hedgerows. I flew on a day where the cloud was at about 3000ft. I didnt really notice the noise or lack of it as I was mainly focussing on the view and movements of the glider and how it interacted with the air around it.The glider itself felt really solidly built. We were towed by a propeller plane up to 2000 ft and over to Drax power station, then released. We circled the power station to get more lift from the rising hot air, and got up to about 2700 ft just below the cloud in a few minutes. There wasnt really a sensation ascending, just the sudden realisation that the ground was further away.Then Alister gave me control and I flew with his guidance for a few minutes, circling and banking. The stick and the rudder pedals were quite intuitive and I could manoeuvre the glider pretty easily with his input and corrections. After a while I did feel a bit queasy dont eat a load of egg and mayonnaise sandwiches half an hour before this if its your first time so we came back down but Alister was quite willing to stay up longer if Id wanted to. Im proud to say I didnt actually vomit although a sick bag is provided . The whole thing lasted about 25 minutes from takeoff to landing. It was well worth it and if youre considering it I would definitely say go for it.A really great experience. Highly recommended.

Everything was handled very professionally efficiently from start to finish. Everyone was keen to give you the experience you sought in some respects more than you first thought you were capable of. At 74 years of age I wasnt expecting to get a good 30 mins of handson flying experience as well as everything else.... brilliant.An outstanding experience.

The guys at the gliding centre were excellent. Very professional and friendly. Alister, my pilot was very informative. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience but did suffer severe queasiness from all the banking to catch thermals so I was left feeling quite ill. Nobodys fault, just one of those things. This was a brilliant experience and I had such a good time. Good instructions and safety briefing at the start and then 35 minutes of soaring above the Yorkshire countryside. It was a bit colder than I expected even though the sun was shining but I was grinning from ear to ear when I landed. Thank you to everyone involved at the gliding club.

The guys at the glider club near Selby were brilliant. Friendly and helpful from booking to flight. Neil, my instructor was spot on, lots of information, friendly and great coaching during my lesson. My wife came to watch and she was greeted by the members on the ground and they chatted to her, giving lots of interesting information about the club, gliders and what was going on. Gliding trip was a gift for my 80th birthday in advance with a year to take it up decided to get on with it whilst I was still able Missed the sign on the way in minor point as sign was only visible from one direction. Well looked after and every thing explained before the flight and not long to wait.Flight was excellent with pilot explaining things and pointing out landmarks etc. Sitting in front of the pilot means a wonderful view. Peace and quiet and excitement all at the same timeOnly problem was getting out not as fit as I used to be but immediately helped by staff.Would have liked a drink and a chat but not available at the time. However, nice pub next to entrance with good meal at reasonable price. A good day out This was at Burn near Selby Ex Bomber Command

My dad had the best time ever, all his children paid for the mile high flight for his 80th birthday. Due to the weather, the runway debris, the unavailability of the right size plane to take him up high enough and then Covid, it actually took him over 2 years to get there. But the staff were brilliant, helpful and friendly, explaining what was going to happen throughout. My dad would definitely do this again and said he would be happy to stay up there. Fabulous time.

After being given a glider flight for Christmas 2020 my idea was to leave it until later in the year but unfortunately COVID got in the way Into the Blue very kindly extended my offer by 12 months and I was able to go and take my flight on Sunday 8th August .It was worth the wait I had a great time the guys at Burn near Selby were fantastic and did everything to make sure things went wellI had a fantastic instructor who was full of information about everything we did and I got to fly the glider as well it was a wonderful experience thanks to all at Burn and of course all at Into the BlueMany thanks once againJK

Very enjoyable overall. My husband had the flight. Last 10 minutes were extremely exciting as the glider had to twist and turn to make a quick landing because of rain. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming, chatting to me while my husband was aloft and helping me to get the best photos. An excellent experience.
