About the experience

There is perhaps one other thing that the South West of England is renowned for as much as its picturesque countryside - and that is of course a traditional cream tea! And on this excellent Steam Train Cream Tea experience, both those things are combined for a truly unforgettable day out on the rails. On board the Mendip Belle Wine and Dine Train, the flagship dining train on the East Somerset Railway, which begins at the village of Cranmore near Shepton Mallet, and terminates at Mendip Vale. On board these beautifully restored and dining coaches, you'll be in the best place to really appreciate train travel from the golden age of steam in the best way possible. With stunning views from your panoramic window sat at your comfy table seats, you can enjoy freshly baked plain scones with butter, jam and clotted cream, served with a pot of freshly brewed tea or coffee. Best of all, your tickets mean you can also enjoy riding on other scheduled services before or after your scheduled cream tea departure, and visit the engine sheds and workshops - so why not make a full day of it?

  • Cream tea served on the Mendip Belle
  • Travel 5 miles on the steam hauled train
  • Visit the engine shed, workshop etc
  • Ride other scheduled trains during the day

  • Steam hauled round trip along the East Somerset Railway line
  • Enjoy a traditional cream tea travelling through the rolling hills of Somerset in the first class dining carriage
  • Scones are served with local clotted cream, butter and strawberry jam with a pot of tea (coffee also available)
  • Opportunity to visit the Engine Shed and Workshop and other points of interest around the railway
  • In addition to your cream tea train, guests are welcome to travel on earlier trains as well for no additional charge

Received as a gift, this experience was a delight, staff were helpful and friendly, the guard a lovely character. We were aware that the track was relatively short but you can do the trip on any of the earlier trains for free. We took our dog on the 2pm train as expected he could not go on the cream tea special, we visited the sheds and had our cream tea in a first class carriage.

A lovely relaxing afternoon. Delicious scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam and a pot of tea. Beautiful old steam train with sights and sounds from yesteryear. Nice to see such enthusiastic people keeping steam alive. Thanks to everyone at Cranmore for looking after us so well.

What a lovely day my partner and myself had, we travelled up from Devon we had a great day.

Interesting to see track preserved but journey very short. The cream tea was served by pleasant staff but was very small for cost.we treated family members to trip as well and were disappointed for the extra cost. We realise the railway is a small enterprise and relies on donations but we would not recommend as a day out for a family there is not enough to do for a day out.

Interesting and enjoyable but the present length of track is ridiculously short and the train never goes more than 5 mph.

Enjoyed the experience to ride on a steam train again, it brought back memories from our youth and the cream tea was a nice touch.
Thought the trip would have been longer

I had great difficulty in finding the station. I was expecting to see a brown board at the side of the road directing me to the station. The train ride and cream tea very pleasant.
