About the experience

This craft experience is one that you’ll - literally - be throwing it down on, as you get to grips with the Potter’s Wheel in a one-to-one workshop at a pottery in Trentham Gardens, Staffordshire, that teaches you all the basics and should hopefully leave you able to throw clay and create your very own pottery pieces from scratch! Your tutors for the day are Mathew and Rachel, who host workshops out of their pottery and are born and raised in Staffordshire - the area of the UK that’s most famous as being home to the Staffordshire Potteries, an industrial area that became a world renowned hub of ceramics from the 17th century onwards, and the birthplace of famous ceramic houses including Doulton, Wedgwood and Spode amongst others. They’re both seasoned potters, although Mathew is actually a teacher himself. He’s incredibly patient and methodical, so you can be confident you’re learning under experienced hands - essential when you’re navigating the potter’s wheel for the first time! You’ll be taken right back to basics, as you begin prepping the clay carefully to go on the wheel, step by step. You’ll discover that getting it right on centre of the wheel will be half the task completed - get this right and you’ll be rolling. Combine this with the optimum speed at which the wheel turns - and this is something that certainly requires a lot of practice. But under Mathew’s guidance, we’re confident that you’ll get the ideal shape in no time at all. And once you’ve achieved this, you’ll be taught how to carefully slice your pottery piece using the wire to move it off the wheel ready for drying. You should hopefully have made around half a dozen pieces to go in the kiln for firing, so you’ll be able to take away and use the beautiful bowls, mugs, jugs or vases you’ve made!

This was a 70th birthday present and I had never been near a potters wheel in my life but was looking forward to the challenge. Mathew put all four students at ease immediately and gently guided us all in the basics of throwing and creating pots. Four pots produced by each of us. We then coloured them to our own designs These will be fired and delivered or collected. Highly recommended and will probably return for the next level of instruction.
