Are you ready for an unforgettable experience? Imagine meeting the skilled hunters of Hertfordshire, the owls, with their super-sensitive hearing and silent flight. These fascinating creatures come in different shapes and sizes and live in the heart of the Rib Valley, between Welwyn and Harlow. Owls are cared for by Charlotte and her father, John, and you can join them for a two-hour visit. During your visit, you'll learn about the different types of owls. You'll meet Ouzo, the Siberian Eagle Owl, who is a hunting master; James, the Barn Owl, with his gorgeous heart-shaped face; Earl, the Great Grey Owl with a brilliant name; and Saki, the Brown Asian Wood Owl, who has been hand-reared since he was two weeks old. You'll have the opportunity to learn about the history of owls, how they are trained (which isn't easy!), and how they hunt. You'll even have plenty of handling time too. The first time you put on a falconer's glove and an owl delicately perches on your hand is an exhilarating experience. You'll get to see those ferocious claws up close, look into those big, big eyes and appreciate the stunning tones and patterns in their feathers. Owls are fascinating creatures with mesmerising eyes and the ability to turn their heads 270 degrees. They have a near all-round vision, perfect for keeping an eye on their prey. They are carnivorous and some are even cannibals. Most are nocturnal, and many have incredible hearing, which allows them to detect a mouse scurrying away from a great distance. These owls are calm and relaxed in the company of humans while still remaining wild birds. Some even love to pose for selfies with visitors! Information
- Spectators are welcome for a £15 fee payable by cash on the day
- Children under the age of 10 are free but must be accompanied by an adult that has purchased a spectator pass
- Minimum age 10
- Under 16's must be accompanied by a participating or spectating adult
Minimum Age: 10 years
- Stroking the Owls is not allowed as this removes the necessary oils from their feathers
- Please arrive 15 minutes before your booked session time
- Sensible outdoor clothing and covered footwear should be worn
- Animal Welfare Licence AW055 issued by Fenland District Council
- Saturdays and Sundays, subject to availability
- Sessions generally operate at 10:30-12:30, 13:00-15:00 and 15:15-17:15 (daylight permitting)
