About the experience

Those who are enthusiastic about vintage diesel engines will hardly believe their luck when they go on this exciting experience, which will see them take a round trip ride in a classic diesel locomotive on the heritage East Kent Railway. Located in the village of Shepherdswell, near Dover in Kent, there can be no better place to enjoy riding alongside the driver than along this charming line in the Kent countryside. Both ends of the line have lots to see and explore; from the quaint little station cafe at Shepherdswell, as well as the miniature railway that runs from here too, to the Selling signal box at Eythorne which has been faithfully restored. Of course, the real excitement awaits when you climb aboard the cab, coupled up to a passenger train of smart coaches, you'll get stunning views down the line and the chance to see what really happens on board a working diesel locomotive. You'll watch as the crew hops down to open the gates at the North Bank level crossing, and proceed through the Golgotha tunnel, all from the driver's perspective. Once through the cutting at the tunnel, you'll be out in the countryside once more. Keep an eye out for the old trackbed - this is where the branch line once started towards the Guilford Colliery. After a 15 minute stop at Eythorne, you'll join the driver in the cab once more for the return trip back to Shepherdswell. And even better, the driver will save you one very important job to do on your ride - to sound the horn! What could be better than that for those who are passionate about diesel engines?

An absolutely amazing experience. Got introduced to the driver and shown the train cab and got to sit in the driver seat. During the ride I sat in the spare seat and saw the level crossing done manually. Enjoyed a nice beer at Eythorne before returning after lunch. So much to see and learn as it’s the old Colliery line. On the return journey the driver allowed me to sound the horn. A fantastic experience if you love trains.
