What is Velodrome Cycling?

Velodrome cycling is a thrilling type of bike racing that happens on a special track called a velodrome. This track is shaped like an oval and has steeply banked turns, which helps riders go faster around corners compared to flat tracks. In velodrome competitions, multiple cyclists race against each other in various events, ranging from quick sprints to team races.

Velodromes come in different lengths, usually between 250 to 500 meters, depending on the specific race. The surface of these tracks can be made from materials like wood, concrete, or asphalt, often topped with a thin layer of sand or wax to give cyclists a better grip. The banking of the turns can vary, allowing for higher speeds as riders navigate through the curves.

This sport has gained a lot of fans over the years, with about 10,000 registered racers in the United States alone. Velodrome cycling is also part of the Olympic Games, where it has been showcased since 1896 (except during 1912). In recent times, many cities around the world have invested in building velodromes, boosting the interest in this exciting sport.

Here's how it works: the track is designed so that the angled turns help counteract the forces on the bicycles, allowing riders to concentrate on their racing strategies instead of worrying about steering. The official racing length is measured from a specific line inside the track, ensuring fair competition.

Track cycling was first held outdoors but later moved indoors so that races could happen all year round. Women's track cycling made its Olympic debut in 1988, marking an important milestone in the sport’s history. Overall, velodrome cycling combines speed, strategy, and skill in a unique and exhilarating setting.
