Blacksmithing is the art of crafting items from wrought iron by using various tools to forge metal. Blacksmiths typically use wrought iron or steel, but they sometimes use other metals to create a range of objects, such as gates, railings, light fixtures, sculptures, tools, and more.
To shape metal, blacksmiths will heat pieces of wrought iron or steel until the metal becomes soft enough for shaping with hand tools.
Unlike machining, forging is a process in which smiths shape metal by hammering it instead of removing material. Even when blacksmiths punch or cut metal, they usually rearrange the metal around the hole rather than drilling it out as a swarf.
