Inspired by the Paris Olympics? Try These Sporty Activities!

There is nothing more humbling than watching the Olympics and realising your time has come and gone in the competitive sporting world. But as you watch the fastest men in the world sprint through the 100m finale, or marvel at the majestic manoeuvrability of divers jumping from great heights into the pool - it might have given you that itch to try something sporty.

After all, just because you’re never going to make it as an Olympic champion, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy sports. If you’re feeling inspired by the Paris Olympics, here are our top suggestions for sporty experiences to get yourself stuck into.

  • Archery

Humans using a bow and arrow is almost as long as the history of our species itself. The remains of arrowheads across South Africa date back to 72,000 years ago when archery was used for hunting and combat. Nowadays, it's one of the most internationally recognised 'shooting sports' and that has a firm place in the Olympics. This time around, it was Republic of Korea's Kim Woojin and Lim Sihyeon who secured gold medal's in the individual rounds.

With hitting the bullseye always looking far easier than it is, why not try your hand at an Archery Lesson? We have a broad range of sessions suitable for complete beginners, usually starting from a minimum age of 7. Whether you want to learn with the backdrop of the Norfolk Fenlands, Bristol, Leicester or Hampshire - there are a huge range of venues across the UK for you to master this ancient sport.

  • Shooting

With a history stretching back to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, it's safe to say that shooting is a staple event with three disciplines - rife, pistol and shotgun. With Great Britain's Amber Rutter narrowly missing a gold in the women's skeet this time around, could this be the beginning of inspiring the next generation of shooters?

If you caught this Olympic coverage and fancy giving it a go yourself - you can! We have a range of Shooting Experiences across the country including air rifle and clay shooting - all of which can help you master that perfect shot. You never know, once you've done a few of these sessions, you may even find yourself at a future Olympics! • Climbing

You've only got to spend a few seconds blinking to miss some of the speed climbers as they scurry up the climbing walls in sometimes under 6 seconds. Often these athletes look more like Spiderman than actual humans, as they skilfully grip the artificial rocks and haul themselves up with ease. With 19-year-old Toby Roberts securing a gold medal in the boulder and lead event - you may be feeling inspired to give it a go yourself.

With a huge range of indoor climbing or even outdoor Climbing in the Brecon Beacons - we have a huge range of Climbing Experiences in the UK to explore! Why not combine two Olympic sports and try Horse Archery? Requiring the skill of riding and shooting, this is the perfect way to try two sports in one! • Sailing
Ride across the waves. enjoy the hot sun on your face and get close to nature as you sail across the waters! Like driving or flying, sailing is one of those skills that can get you from a to b, but are also an exciting way to enjoy some outdoor time. Although it seems a little too relaxing to be an Olympic sport - the speeds these athletes travel at through the waves is impressive!

If you want to learn by the book, you can do a RYA Level 1 Sailing Course, or if you're after the more scenic, explorative route you can sign up for a Sailing Experience in Lulworth Cove or Durdle Door. Whatever you decide - sailing is guaranteed to get you soaring through the waves as you learn a new skill!
